What Pawnpetal puts in one place
Valorem makes Pawnpetal. This comparison uses official product descriptions checked on October 13, 2026. It does not include side-by-side app testing or measured learning outcomes.
Pawnpetal combines 72 free interactive lessons, daily checkmate puzzles, three offline bot levels and same-device play. You can start with a lesson and try the idea in a local game without choosing a learning subscription. Local play and lessons need no Pawnpetal account.
Its useful starting point is concrete: learn a small idea, try it yourself and return to a position when you have a question. You do not need to move your existing online chess activity to try that approach.
The differences that matter
- Learning access: Pawnpetal includes its 72 lessons. Chess.com Basic includes unlimited Learn to Play access plus one extra lesson per day elsewhere; Premium gives unlimited access across its lessons. Lichess learning resources are free and ad-free, and patron support does not unlock extra features.
- Online and study breadth: Chess.com offers tournaments, puzzles and game review. Lichess offers free tournaments, studies, an opening explorer and analysis tools. Keep those strengths in view if they are central to your chess.
- Offline play: it is not unique to Pawnpetal. Chess.com documents offline computer games and same-device Play in Person; Lichess’s 2026 changelog documents offline computer play.
- Devices: Pawnpetal’s official editions are for Apple devices. Chess.com and Lichess also support Android and browser-based chess. Check compatibility in your local store.
Use the lesson path for one specific question
A finite course can make the next step easier to choose. Begin with a question you can answer on the board: why a move is illegal, whether a piece is defended or how to recognize checkmate. Choose the relevant topic instead of racing to complete a lesson count.
Pawnpetal’s lessons cover foundations, rules, openings, tactics, strategy and endgames. After an example, try the position independently and explain the opponent’s reply. Then use a bot or agreed teaching game to practice looking for the same idea.
Separate local practice from connected play
Pawnpetal describes bots and same-device games as offline activities. Game Center friend matches require internet access, and optional iCloud synchronization is a separate connected feature. Choose your mode according to where you and your opponent will be.
Before a trip, disconnect Wi-Fi and cellular data and try the exact lesson or local mode you intend to use. An offline game does not prove that every daily-content or synchronization feature works disconnected.

Choose the board without buying lesson access
Pawnpetal starts with Pastel Garden and Classic Clarity. Optional cosmetic purchases change the look of the game and are permanent purchases, with no subscriptions. Core chess, lessons and daily puzzles are described as free and ad-free.
If a different piece set interests you, first check that you can recognize every piece comfortably. Appearance is a preference, not evidence of stronger chess instruction.

A first-session test
Try one lesson and one local game. Check what you can do:
- Can you find a suitable starting topic?
- Can you explain the exercise without copying its answer?
- Are the pieces readable at your normal screen size?
- Can you find and continue the activity you want?
- Does the app cover your intended opponent, device and connection setup?
Is Pawnpetal a replacement for every Chess.com or Lichess feature?
No. Choose based on the activities you need. This comparison does not claim equal tournament, community, analysis or learning depth across all three products.
Which one should a complete beginner try first?
Try a basic lesson on a supported device and see whether you can explain the result yourself. A clear starting point and repeatable practice matter more than a long feature list.
